About the Program

The new farm laws, namely, Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act have been passed by the Parliament on September 17th 2020.

The Government brought the legislations with the objectives of freeing up curbs on trade, liberalising the regulatory system, providing barrier-free trade and creating a farmer-friendly environment. However, the farmers, for whose benefit these reforms were brought about, are agitating against them all over the country and demanding withdrawal.

The Department of Social Work (Aided) is conducting this Panel Discussion to understand the reasons behind the ongoing farmers’ protests and to shed light on the future implications and consequences of both withdrawal and non-withdrawal of these legislations along with the feasibility of potential compromises.
