ABOUT GNLU Centre for Disability Studies

The GNLU Centre for Disability Studies was established on 02 October 2019 to work for disability rights and social justice by promoting teaching and research in the interdisciplinary areas of sociology, social work, law, and policy. Through curriculum development, research projects, and disability studies, the Centre would attempt to contribute meaningfully to disability and human rights, disability and society, accessibility and reasonable accommodations, inclusive education, gender, and disability, amongst others. The Centre intends to create an environment ensuring mainstreaming and equal participation of students with disabilities in the University. The Centre would bring together academicians, researchers, scholars, lawyers, practitioners, activists, students, and other stakeholders to foster dialogue on the increasing relevance of disability studies and research.

About the Workshop:

In order to assist undergraduates, graduates, research scholars, and academicians at the early stage of their carrier and to sharpen their knowledge and critical skills about conducting research in disability studies, the GNLU Centre for Disability Studies, Gandhinagar will organize the 2nd Edition of Summer School on Disability Studies on Research Methods in Disability Studies p on 08 April – 14 April 2023.

This in-depth Five-day workshop on fostering disability research seeks to inform participants of noteworthy advancements in the discipline as well as highlight problems, subjects, and regions within the field that call for more study. The workshop will emphasize the process of choosing methods appropriate to research questions; and, conversely, the application of various research paradigms, methods, and designs. As this is a core research methodology course, participants will develop an understanding of the connections between epistemology, methodology, application of data analysis techniques, and knowledge production.

Resource persons:

National-level academicians, researchers, and practitioners from all over India specializing in disability studies and related topics will serve as resource people for the workshop.

Learning objectives:

1.Develop a general understanding of and knowledge base in disability perspectives and their application in methodologies and methods.

2.Understand and apply the importance of ethics and evaluate ethical considerations.

3.To acquaint the participants with tools and techniques required for data management in disability studies – data extraction/ collection, validation of data, and analytical writing.

4.To equip the participants with the use of qualitative and quantitative research tools, techniques, and perspectives in disability studies

5.To train them in applying methods; impart familiarity in selecting appropriate tools and techniques and writing reports in the disability studies.

Mode of Session

The session will run entirely online (via Zoom/ Youtube). The session will be supported with sign-language interpretation and closed-captioning.

Timings of the sessions: 03:00 pm – 04:30 pm

Participants:

The workshop will be open to anyone interested in disability-related research. Students enrolled in research programs at universities, early-career faculty members, or those recently beginning research and writing on disability are welcome to participate in the program.

E-Certificate:

MCQ test will be conducted on the 7th Day of Summer School. The certificate will be given to the participants who participated in all the sessions and secured a minimum of 50 percent marks in the exam.
