Couple of months ago, Uttarakhand High Court in its landmark judgment accorded the status of “living human entities” to Ganga and Yamuna. Centre approach SC to challenge this landmark judgment.
Apart from granting status and rights to Ganga and Yamuna also appointed chief secretary of Uttarakhand, Namami Gange director and advocate general of the state the legal parents of the two rivers. Main ground of challenging the judgment is “what if the river is polluted in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand or UP”.
Centre has no problem with according the legal entity to rivers, they are only challenging the appointment of legal parents.
