Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, the first of its kind in the IIT system was set up in 2006. The basis of the School is to cater to the need for lawyers with technical expertise. We see ourselves as a part of the global endeavor to integrate technology and law to build technical lawyers with expertise to deal with the legal issues in the interface of technology and law. As such we are the only Law School with a technology focus.

The School offers three programs; LL.B with Honours Intellectual Property Rights; LL.M; and Doctoral Program in Law. The global perspective is captured well in the academic program in which we offer diverse set of courses. A comparative study of law from different jurisdictions is also an important feature of many of our courses.

Our faculty are a vibrant group drawn from different disciplines of law. They also teach across different IIT departments, conduct various international, governmental as well as sponsored industrial research projects. Our faculty have several international publications. They have won several awards and are members of national as well as international bodies. The School invites several guest faculty, adjunct faculty, industry experts to build practical exposure to students in different areas of law.

Workshops, Clinical legal courses, Court room exercises provide the students in-house training in practical aspects. A wide range of electives and breadth subjects offered provide students greater insights into different areas. Our students have won awards at moot court competitions, seminars and conferences.

Our alumni are in important positions in industry, law firms, practice, institutions and academia. Many others have started new ventures. RGSOIPL believes in holistic growth. Our aim is to produce lawyers with interdisciplinary strength.

Eligibiligy Criteria for LL.B & LL.M. Programs

Eligibility for LL.B.

 

First Class Bachelors Degree in Engineering / Technology / Medicine or equivalent.
OR
First Class Masters Degree in Science or Pharmacy or equivalent.
OR
First Class MBA Degree with any of the above

If the degree awarding institute does not explicitly mention “First Class” then the eligibility will be a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale.

The CGPA will not be converted into percentage marks if the degree awarding institute provides marks in CGPA system. Then, the admission will be based on the CGPA awarded in the transcript. If the CGPA is on a different scale other than 10.0, the eligibility of the candidate will be calculated corresponding to the equivalence stated above.

Eligibility for LL.M.

  • First class (or equivalent) in Bachelor of Laws LL.B./B.L. (5 years) program from any recognised University.
  • First Class (or equivalent) in Bachelor of Laws LL.B./B.L.(3 years) program from any recognised University along with Bachelor’s Degree (not less than 3 years) in Humanities/ Science/ Commerce or equivalent.
  • If the degree awarding institute does not explicitly mention “First Class”, then the eligibility will be a minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale.
  • The CGPA will not be converted into percentage marks if the degree awarding institute provides marks in CGPA system. Then, the admission will be based on the CGPA awarded in the transcript. If the CGPA is on a different scale other than 10.0, the eligibility of the candidate will be calculated corresponding to the equivalence stated above.
  • Students pursuing LL.B (Hons.) in Intellectual Property Law from the IIT Kharagpur in the academic year 2023-24 with final CGPA of 8.5 or above are eligible for admission in LL.M program without appearing in this entrance test.
  • RGSOIPL may offer LLM specialization in Intellectual Property Law, International Law and Criminal Law. LLM aspirants will be required to give their choices for specialization in the application form. Limited students will be admitted in each specialization (tentative 20) based on merit and choice. No change of specialization is permitted after the same is allotted.
