CONCEPT NOTE

This Call for chapter is for contributions in an edited Book on the theme 75 YEARS OF THE SUPREME COURT OF INDIA: UPHOLDING DEMOCRACY AND DELIVERING JUSTICE.

The 75 years’ journey of the Supreme Court of India reflects a tradition in preserving democracy and administration of justice. Established in 1950, the Supreme Court has evolved as a sentinel of the Constitution, defending the fundamental rights of citizens and maintaining separation of powers. The Court has made momentous contributions to the social and political life of India. It started with the case of Kesavananda Bharati. It formulated the Basic Structure Doctrine which has been central in constitutional jurisprudence. The Court has continued to uphold progressive jurisprudence as was in the case of the decriminalization of the act of gay sex in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India. As guardians of democracy and justice, the Supreme Court of India remains a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring strength of India’s democratic framework.
