Pro Bono Club of HNLU Conducts Awareness Camp for Women Prisoners at Central Jail, Raipur
In a bid to empower and educate women prisoners about their legal rights and remedies, the Pro Bono Club of HNLU (Hidayatullah National Law University), in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), organized an impactful awareness camp at the Central Jail in Raipur on April 6, 2024.
The event was conducted by Dr. Parvesh Kumar Rajput, Faculty Convenor of Pro Bono, and Dr. Kaumudhi Challa, Faculty Convenor of the Legal Aid and Social Services Committee with Eight Students of the Pro Bono Club on the important provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) and remedies available to the women prisoners.
Student team under the team leader Sarah Samuel outlined the importance of prisoners’ rights and basic amenities that are to be provided in the Jail.The team interacted with approximately 50 women prisoners, including convicts and undertrial prisoners. Issues such as access to justice, living conditions, and the right to life with dignity were discussed extensively during the camp. Pamphlets were distributed to reinforce key points and provide reference material. The team conducted a survey to understand individual cases better, offering suitable legal guidance and support to the prisoners.
The event received valuable support from the jail authorities, notably Ms. Kushboo Mishra, as well as Shri. Praveen Mishra (Secretary DLSA, Raipur) and two DLSA paralegals who provided assistance throughout the camp.
The awareness camp proved to be a significant step towards empowering women prisoners with knowledge about their rights and legal avenues for seeking justice. The successful endeavor signifies a step forward in promoting social justice and empowerment among marginalized communities, reaffirming HNLU’s commitment to legal education and societal welfare.
