NLU Delhi Call for Abstracts – 2nd Annual Doctoral Colloquium (Last Date: December 10, 2023)

National Law University Delhi is proud to launch the second edition of its flagship Doctoral Colloquium on Contemporary Themes in Law. This year in addition to the general track, the colloquium invites submissions for a specialised track on Corporate, Competition and Commercial Laws.

The Doctoral Colloquium is open for participation to all enrolled PhD students within India. Limited support for travel and participation is envisaged this year.

About the NLUD Annual Doctoral Law Colloquium

The aim of the colloquium is to bring together PhD students undertaking research within the broad discipline of law and its adjacent fields, and provide them with a supportive and collaborative environment for exchange of ideas and to build networks with peers and experts in the field. To this end, scholars registered in non-law disciplines but working on primarily legal issues from an interdisciplinary perspective are also invited to participate.

In order to provide participants with a rich learning experience, the Colloquium will also host two panel discussions on academic research and publication. The first panel will see rich and generative discussion between seasoned scholars and prolific writers, on fundamental aspects of writing and publishing as academicians. The second panel will shift the focus to the specificities of the academic publication industry, where an editor and copy editor of a renowned publishing house will engage in a dialogue on the skills of academic publishing and its different facets.

The Colloquium is structured in a manner that allows participants to receive feedback from experts, as well as their peers. Every selected paper will be submitted to an assigned panel, where a discussant with expertise in the subject area will provide detailed feedback on the manuscript. Additionally, each participant in the panel will be assigned a manuscript of another scholar from the same panel, and will be required to present their work. Following the presentation, the floor  will be open for discussion and response, allowing the participants to constructively engage with the works of their peers.

It is hoped that the colloquium will create opportunities and a platform for young scholars to engage in dialogue and sharpen their research ideas, build research collaborations and professional networks.

Format of the Colloquium

The Colloquium envisages creation of an intellectual forum where engagement on both wide- ranging as well as specific issues, can take place. In order to ensure this, submissions are invited for the general track. The potential themes for the general track are broad, including but not limited to the following areas:

General Track

  • Constitutional Law
  • Criminal law
  • Labour Law
  • Family Law
  • Law and Technology
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Trade Law
  • Public and Private International Law
  • Climate Change and Energy Law
  • Environment Law and Sustainable Development
  • Access to Justice

Given the changing global economic scenario, the environmental challenges due to climate change, and the changing nature of questions on access to justice, the general track seeks to reflect research being conducted on these issues across the country in this edition. Within the general track limited financial support for themes of climate justice and access to justice is available.

Additionally, this edition will host a specialised track with focus on corporate law, commercial law and competition law. Building on NLUD’s strength in offering a robust programme in these fields, this specialised track will bring together established and emerging scholars researching on evolving facets of mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, bankruptcy code, developments in competition law, among others. Limited financial support for themes in this track is available.

The illustrative themes for the specialised track are as follows:

  • Law and Markets
  • Competition Law
  • Company Law
  • Banking Law
  • Commercial Laws

Students are also invited to send in their abstracts that do not necessarily fit neatly into the above listed categories. The organisers will strive to build sessions that can capture a wide range of research interests.
