NLU Delhi FTF call for Applications for Long-Term Intern (Legal Aid); Apply by January 31

Project 39A is seeking to engage a long term intern on part-time basis for remote work on issues related to legal aid in the criminal justice system for its Fair Trial Fellowship Programme (“Programme”). The period of internship will be for 6 months and any extension will be subject to the needs of the Programme.

About Project 39A
Project 39A draws inspiration from Article 39-A in the Indian Constitution on equal justice and signals the broadening of our work on the criminal justice system in India. We undertake litigation, research and outreach relating to forensics, torture, legal aid, mental health and
criminal justice, and death penalty (for more information on Project 39A, visit www.project39a.com).

About the Programme
The Programme is an intervention to provide legal assistance to undertrial prisoners in Yerwada and Nagpur Central Prison in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) and the Government of Maharashtra. The Programme has the following objectives:

A. Providing quality legal representation to undertrial prisoners and supporting the inmates through the legal proceedings.
B. Providing support to DLSAs and Taluka Legal Services Committees (TLSCs) and strengthening mechanisms for providing free legal aid to persons in custody.
C. Training, mentoring and building capacities of young professionals to improve the quality of socio-legal services within the criminal justice system.

Minimum qualifications
II-V year students of an integrated 5-year LL.B. programme or II/III-year students of a 3 year LL.B. programme during the academic year 2022-2023.

Stipend
The intern will be paid a stipend as per standards of Project 39A.

B. Statement of Purpose of not more than 500 words explaining their interest in this internship
C. Writing Sample of not more than 2000 words (exclusive of footnotes) on any issue related to the criminal justice system.

Note
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a virtual interview and Project 39A reserves the right to conduct further rounds of assessment. Project 39A further reserves the right to not fill the internship position
