The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint to a Lectureship or Senior Lectureship (dependent on experience) an outstanding candidate with research and teaching expertise in Intellectual Property law. Interviews for this position are scheduled for Monday 27 June 2022.
The successful candidate will have a primary research interest in IP law and the ability to produce world leading research in this area, including an interest in how this research will have an impact in society.
The successful candidate’s principal teaching contribution will be in IP modules in our undergraduate programme, in particular the electives Intellectual Property Law and Intellectual Property Dissertation, and in our LLM programme, where we offer a specialist Intellectual Property and Information Law Pathway.
The successful candidate will be actively involved in the administration and academic life of a world leading law school, and will carry out administrative duties in the Dickson Poon School of Law.
The successful candidate will be responsible to the Executive Dean.
The Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College London is one of the oldest law schools in England and recognised globally as one of the best law schools in the world. The School is ranked 16th in the world and 5th in the UK in the QS World University Rankings for Law 2021. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, the School was rated 4th in relation to its 4* publications and 6th for research power in the UK.
The Dickson Poon School of Law has a long history of strength in IP law. In addition to our undergraduate IP offerings and our Intellectual Property and Information Law Pathway, we offer a Diploma/ MA programme in UK, EU & US Copyright Law. Each year we select and coach a King’s team for the Oxford International Intellectual Property Moot, for which we were semi-finalists in 2021 and runners-up in 2022. Our IP academics conduct research in a range of areas, using doctrinal, empirical, historical, interdisciplinary and comparative methodologies. The successful candidate will join a supportive group of colleagues, with many opportunities for that person to develop professionally and take on leadership roles.

Key responsibilities
- Make a strong contribution to the development of the School and University’s research profile, including (for Lecturer) developing a track record or (for Senior Lecturer) a developed track record of world-leading publications in intellectual property law, where appropriate through participation in impact activities, and by active participation in research communities.
- Develop and articulate a research agenda that aims to place the successful candidate at the forefront of their field over the course of their career, for example through applying for and securing research grants, and developing appropriate external research networks.
- Make a strong contribution to the development and delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including giving lectures, and delivering seminars and tutorials, on campus or online as appropriate. The successful applicant’s main duties will involve teaching IP modules on our LLB and LLM programmes.
- Contribute research-informed teaching to our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, including through the supervision and examination of postgraduate research students at the School and in the wider academic community.
- Take part in the development of new teaching initiatives, technology-enhanced, online and distance learning, in accordance with the School and University’s strategic goals.
- Contribute to the holistic development of our students through pastoral care and engagement in student experience activities, including by acting as a personal tutor.
- Participate in student development processes, including student progress monitoring, education assessment and examination.
- Be available for duties during assessment and marking periods.
- Be responsible for marking formative and summative work and to provide timely and effective feedback working closely with module leaders and programme directors and the professional services programme and assessments team.
- Accept academic administrative responsibilities, such as in School education or research roles, and in School or University governance structures, as commensurate with the candidate’s seniority and experience.
- Engage in professional development to further the post-holder’s career.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria (for Lecturer or Senior Lecturer):
- PhD, DPhil, JSD, or equivalent experience in intellectual property law
- Demonstrable track record of excellence in research in intellectual property law
- The publication of research of the highest quality in peer-reviewed journals and/or in books
- Track record of excellent teaching, and knowledge of intellectual property law at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
- A commitment to, and interest in, intellectual property law as the primary focus of the candidate’s teaching
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Competence with electronic learning platforms and other IT skills
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to work to and meet deadlines
- Ability to work both on one’s own initiative and as part of a team
- Willingness to contribute to the School’s culture of collaboration
Further essential criteria for Senior Lecturer only:
- Significant track record of world leading or internationally excellent publications in intellectual property law
- Strong track record of performance in academic administrative roles
Desirable criteria (for Lecturer or Senior Lecturer):
- Ability to contribute to the teaching of core law subjects within the undergraduate law curriculum
- The potential to attract funding for research
- The potential for the candidate’s research agenda to have impact
- Experience of module leadership
Further desirable criteria for Senior Lecturer only:
- Significant experience of module leadership
- Experience in attracting funding for research
- Experience of PhD supervision
