The solutions for several of our sustainable development challenges can be found in Biodiversity. It remains as the foundation upon which we can build a better future. The United Nations had proclaimed May 22 as ‘The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)’ to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. This commemorates the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This year, Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity has announced the Biodiversity Day 2022 slogan: “Building a shared future for all life”. The slogan aptly indicates the aspirations of people about the future framework for biodiversity governance. The COP 15 is expected to take place this year which will adopt the Global Biodiversity Framework based on the ongoing negotiations. Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur is organising the National Dialogue on ‘Biodiversity Governance – Building a shared future for all life’ to deliberate the future of biodiversity governance in the backlight of ongoing negotiations at international level. The event will discuss the need for coherence with other MEAs; basing the framework on the principles of equity and fairness; the policy perspectives on agrobiodiversity with a view to address the concerns about food security and biodiversity governance and interface with IPR.
