SMU’s mission is to generate leading-edge research and produce broad-based, creative and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy. This mission has resulted in SMU being ranked No. 11 among the world’s specialist universities, including established academic institutions.

Located in Singapore’s Central Business District, SMU Yong Pung How School of Law (YPHSL) has forged strong cooperation with leading law firms and technology companies. Its academic research focuses on cutting-edge issues on transnational commercial law in Asia, law and technology, and dispute settlement. SMU faculty members have diverse experiences in multiple jurisdictions and have published widely in leading international journals.

The YPHSL Visiting Scholars Programme is primarily intended to accommodate self-funded academic faculty from other universities and senior legal professionals who wish to pursue research at SMU.

This programme is designed to accommodate visiting scholars with a broad range of legal experience and qualifications and to encourage interactions and collaboration with YPHSL faculty on legal and interdisciplinary research.

Visiting Scholars Programme

Visiting Scholars form an integral part of YPHSL. They will present at and participate in research seminars. They may also contribute to the research projects of faculty members or research centres such as the Centre for Commercial Law in Asia (CCLA), Centre for AI & Data Governance (CAIDG), and the Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy (SIDRA).

Visiting Scholars may be appointed from:

  • legal professionals with extensive law-related experience such as senior practitioners, judges or government legal officials.
  • in exceptional cases, advanced Ph.D. students who are sponsored by YPHSL faculty may be accepted as Visiting Researchers.

This Visiting Scholars Programme is separate and independent from the Visiting Professors Programme.
