ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY:
The Public Petition dated 11-11-1839 initiated the establishment of Madras University. It was in January 1840 with Mr. George Norton as its President, that the University Board was constituted. In 1854 after a lapse of 14 years, the Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and as a sequel to this on 5th September 1857 by an Act of Legislative Council of India, the University was established. The University was organised in the model of London University. Madras University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of south India. The University area of jurisdiction has been confined to three districts of Tamil Nadu in recent years. This is consequent to establishment of various universities in the State and demarcation of the University territories. This University has been growing from strength to strength while widening its teaching and research activities.
CONCEPT OF THE WEBINAR:
In international law and relations, ownership of territory is significant because sovereignty over land defines what constitutes a state. The benefits of having territory, though, are only as great as a state’s borders are clear, because a state’s boundaries must be well defined for the modern state to function. In recent years disputes classified either as ‘territorial disputes’ or as ‘boundary disputes’ has highlighted the need to consider the laws relating to acquisition or transmission of territory, or to the creation, location and effect of territorial frontiers.
Territorial disputes are a common source of armed conflict and war, yet, during the twentieth century, governments have resolved dozens of territorial disputes through recourse to international arbitration or adjudication. Understanding the controversies going around the world including India, the Department of Legal Studies decided to organise a One Day National Seminar on “Territorial Disputes under International Law: Effects and Consequences” on 9th September, 2020, highlighting the effects and consequences of the Dispute.
