Prashant Bhushan, a public interest lawyer in the Supreme Court of India, recently tweeted two posts for which he was held guilty with ‘criminal contempt’.The court had taken suo moto notice of the two tweets posted by Bhushan on June 27 and 29.
A three judge bench of Justices-Arun Mishra,BR Gavai and Krishna Murari reads a judgement on August 14 that,”The Indian Judiciary is not only one of the pillars on which the Indian Democracy stands but is the central pillar.An attempt to shake the very foundation of constitutional democracy has to be dealt with an iron hand”.
Bhushan seeks deferment of hearing on sentence till review plea is reconsidered.On 20th August,Bhushan refuses to apologise for his contemptuous tweets.The Apex court gives Bhushan 2 days to reconsider.
