The Supreme Court stayed its order to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and agreed with the Centre’s suggestion to appoint a “technical team.” The technical team will visit the Cauvery basin and will submit its report on the situation.
The technical team will be led by G.S. Jha who is the Chairman of Central Water Commission. The team will visit the river basin along with nominees of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry and submit a report to the Supreme Court by Oct. 17.
A Bench of Justices U.U. Lalit and Dipak Misra ordered Karnataka, as an interim arrangement, to release 2,000 cusecs of water from October 7 to 18.
Meanwhile Tamil Nadu has accused the Centre of “playing into the hands of the Karnataka government” to deny the people of Tamil Nadu their share of Cauvery water.
And on the other hand advocate Fali Nariman for Karnataka asked the court on what basis are they directing Karnataka to give 10,000 or 15,000 cusecs when they are unaware of the ground realities and should visit the basin.
