Notice to the Centre: Plea to upload FIR’s on websites.

A Petition was filed by the Nainital-based Youth Bar Association of India, which contended that obtaining a copy of the FIR from the police was a near-impossible task and affected the right of a person to apply for bail or defend himself before the law. The Petition stated that FIR is a public document and any person has right to inspect and demand a certified copy in terms of Section 76 of the Evidence Act, 1872.
The Supreme Court on Monday sought the government’s response on a petition seeking  order to the police to upload all First Information Reports (FIRs)within 24 hours of their registration on the official website and in furtherance of it a bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh issued notice on the petition as earlier filed.
