Madras High Court assured that senior citizens will get special treatment in Government Hospitals.

In K. Arumugam V. State of Tamil Nadu And Ors. the Madras High Court assured that all senior citizens will get special treatment in Government Hospitals. The Madras High Court here directed the State Government to open special wards for senior citizens in all district hospitals. It also directed to constitute maintenance tribunals and other welfare measures to be provided under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
The petitioner filed a writ petition and the respondent has been directed to take necessary steps

to open special wards for senior citizens at all district hospitals with all infrastructure under Section 20 of the Maintenance and Welfare Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007, and to direct the respondents to constitute a ā€˜Maintenance Tribunalā€™ in each sub division in the state of Tamil Nadu under Section 7 of the same Act.
The following guidelines has been issued in this regard:-
1. Special attention to be given to the senior citizens while treating in physiotherapy department.
2. Special attention to be given to the senior citizens while coming for treatment.
3. Separate beds should be provided for the senior citizens.

4. Separate queue should be formulated in the OP department such as while issuing OP chit, checkup place, lab andĀ Ā  during receiving drugs, etc.

5. The same system should be followed in the Indian Medicine Department functioning at the Government headquarters hospitals.
