HKFPR launches Lets Talk Waste (A campaign on solid waste management) in Dehradun

Since the formation of Modi government in the year 2014, the political process and dynamics of policy formulation have undergone a drastic change. “Swachh Bharat Mission” which is the pet project of Shri Narendra Modi, suddenly brought a revolutionary change in the traditional mind set of our society which was till then living in unhygienic atmosphere or probably not paying attention to the importance of the cleanliness. This entire mission of clean India is marvellous opportunity for all of us. We should grab it and support PM Modi in this new process of our nation-building.
Dehradun, which from the time of its formation known for greenery and healthy environment is today suffering from severe crisis of pollution and waste management. The entire public of Doon as well as the state government has been helpless in front of this massive and growing problem of waste management in the city. Till now, nothing substantial has been done in this regard by the nagar nigam too.
Uttarakhand, on daily basis produces around 3000 MT of waste, out of which only 50% is scientifically disposed off. Almost 60% of the urban areas of Uttarakhand does not have proper scientific garbage disposal system. The state of safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) is also very pathetic. The news of their exploitation has been flashing out in the media every now and then. The absence of door-to-door collection facility, roadside piling up of garbage, burning of waste in open air have been some major issues with respect to solid waste management in Dehradun. The segregation of waste, which is considered to be the primary step in organizing the waste management, is also not happening at the city level.
Let’s Talk Waste is one such campaign launched by Hari-Kamal Foundation for Policy Research which aims at tackling the problem of waste management in the city of Dehradun. The campaign focusses extensively on launching awareness drives right from the schools and colleges to the posh colonies of the Dehradun. The campaign also concentrate upon information dissemination, research, policy formulation and capacity building.
The campaign will also be targeted towards the betterment and welfare of safai karamcharis.
One of the strongest feature of this campaign is the usage of social media. Foundation will be using new and innovative techniques to put forward its agenda on waste management in the city of Dehradun. The people have started responding to the social media awareness drives initiated by us.
The main motive behind the launch of this campaign has been the collective approach and response towards the issue of garbage in the city. The campaign does not believe in blaming the government or its agencies (like nagar nigam) for failure. Rather, it emphasizes on quick response and providing possible solutions to existing problems.
It is appeal from all the concerned citizens to join this campaign, as collectively and fight this growing problem of waste management and emerge victorious.
