Govt changes names of Calcutta, Bombay, Madras HCs

The Central Government has decided to change the names of three of India’s oldest high courts.In a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, soon after several new faces joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Council of Ministers, the central government decided to change the names of the Calcutta High Court to Kolkata High Court, Bombay High Court to Mumbai High Court and Madras High Court to Chennai High court, keeping up with the changed names of the cities in which they are located.The Calcutta High Court formally opened on July 1, 1862.

The oldest high court in India, it is among the three chartered high courts in India, along with those of Bombay and Madras.The Bombay High Court, which has its jurisdiction over the states of Maharashtra and Goa as well the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, was inaugurated on August 4,1862.The Madras High court was inaugurated shortly after, on August 15, 1862.
