France’s highest administrative Court lifted Burkini ban and said local authorities can restrict individual liberties only if there are ‘proven risks’ to public order.
The court held that the ban infringed the basic freedoms such as freedom to come and go, freedom of conscience, and personal freedom.
The police earlier had fined Muslim women for wearing burkinis i.e. full body swimwear, on beaches. This act had raised a fierce debate about women’s rights and French’s strictly guarded secularism
