Today, Supreme Court comprised of seven bench judge made a unprecedented move by issuing a contempt notice to a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court and taken away all his judicial and administrative powers.
Justice Karnan wrote letters to the Prime Minister, Law Minister, Chief Justice of India, judges of SC and others levelling allegations of corruption against the Supreme Court and Madras High Court judges.
Bench headed by CJI J.S. Kehar said that we must be as careful as we can, the bench said, adding that it has to be established whether Justice Karnan wrote those communications. Bench directed him to appear in person before it on February 13 to show cause to the court why contempt proceedings should not be taken against him.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi made a submission that the time has come for the highest judiciary to take cognisance of Justice Karnan’s alleged misconduct and protect the judiciary as the apex judiciary is empowered under Articles 129 read with its extraordinary powers under Article 142 (2) to punish a member of the High Court and subordinate judiciary for contempt.
