SC: Selling of BS-III vehicles is prohibited

From 1 April 2017, BS IV emission norms would come in force, for which manufacturers urged the Supreme Court to allow the companies to sell their existing stock of BS-III vehicles. The plea of manufacturers was also backed by Central Government.
However, Supreme Court refused to accept its plea and said health of millions of citizens was more important that commercial interests of manufacturers and directed the government not allow registration of polluting BS III vehicles after March 31.
To support the plea they manufacturers said that they were allowed to sold their stocks in 2005 and 2010 when new emission norms were made compulsory and manufacturing vehicles with the old technology was banned, not the sale of existing stocks.
But SC stand firm with its dictum by saying that it could not allow BS-III vehicles to ply on roads.
