Today, Supreme Court while hearing several petitions in Hindutva case made a verdict which is came to be as a landmark judgement that will change the way political parties do politics in India, the Supreme Court said that no politician can seek vote in the name of caste, creed, or religion.
SC said that relationship between man and God is individual choice; and the State is forbidden to interfere in such an activity. Supreme Court also added that election is a secular exercise and thereby its way and process should be followed.
The verdict came with the ratio of 4:3 Chief Justice T S Thakur and three others in the 4:3 verdict said the meaning of religion mentioned representation of people act meant the religion and caste of all including voters, candidates and their agents etc.
However, the minority view of three judges namely, UU Lalit, A K Goel and D Y Chandrachud – held that the term ‘his’ religion means religion of candidate only.
