SC upholds 25-year jail sentence without remission to Vikas Yadav

The Supreme Court while using its  power to impose “special sentences,” gave its order awarding Uttar Pradesh politician D.P. Yadav’s son Vikas Yadav, 25 years’ sentence without remission in 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.
The  Bench consisting of Justices Dipak Misra and C. Nagappan based its judgement on  judicial precedents  to expand jail sentences over above the statutory maximum and minimum sentences prescribed in law. The apex Court also remarked that all senetences would run concurrently.
The murder was considered as honour killing which was done to stop relationship between Katara and Vikas’s sister. The Supreme Court had earlier confirmed that the murder was very well planned. Co-convicts Vishal Yadav and Sukhdev Pehalwan were also granted 25-year jail term without remission.
