A West Bengal based woman had approached the court to declare the practises of talaq-e-bidat i.e. tripple talaq, polygamy and nikah halala as unconstitutional and illegal.
Nikah Halala is a divorce dictat in Sharia law according to which a muslim divorced couple cannot re-marry unless the woman marries another man and he divorces her.
Supreme Court issued notices to ministries of Law and Justice, Women and Child Development, National Commission for Women, Minority Affairs and Police chiefs of Bihar and West Bengal to respond to the plea.
The bench was headed by Chief Justice of India T.S. Thakur, Justice D.Y.Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y.Chandrachud.
