“The very first requirement in a hospital is that it should do the sick no harm”
-Florence Nightingale
In a PIL filed by Meera Devi (45), the High Court of Delhi has asked the state government and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to suggest ways to improve the medical facilities provided by a government hospital. The suggestions are to be given by 19th October.
Meera Devi is a patient of brain tumour. The government hospital scheduled the surgery for August 2018. But, on asking for an earlier date, she was asked to get treated from a private hospital which would cost her about 1.5 lakhs.
In a usual manner, delays or improper treatment has been observed from the side of government hospitals which clearly is negligent on the part of government as well as the doctors. The poor and needy who cannot afford costly treatment of private hospitals is denied of his right to medical facilities. The court seeks suggestions to provide timely and free treatment to poor ones suffering serious ailment.
Such cases point towards the immense need of improvising the medical facilities to meet the ends of effectiveness.
