The Government in KerelaĀ presented its budget for 2016-2017 on Friday. The Government mainly focused on the strengthening of social welfare schemes, public health and education.
The budget by Pinarayi Vijayan-led government proposed new tax proposals including a ‘fat tax’ of 14.5 % for burgers, pizzas and pastas sold in branded restaurants. The budget also proposed 5% on certain packed foods.
The State was going through various financial crisis due to various factors. The budget proposed an ‘anti-slowdown package’ of Rs 12,000 crore for various development and infrastructure projects like roads, bridges and IT parks.
The budget, presented by state finance minister TM Thomas Isaac, also saidĀ that necessary steps would be taken to increase the tax revenue by 25 % p.a. by various ways including elimination of corruption and implementingĀ trader-friendly measures. He further said, steps would be taken to attract Rs 1,00,000 crore investment in various sectors in the next five years.
